Customs & Excise Manager
Crewe, Cheshire £60,000 to £65,000 + car + 16% pension
Our client is an international group whose in-house tax team seeks an experienced Customs practitioner for a Customs & Excise role. You may not currently have Excise experience. Post Covid the plan is for staff to be in the office 1-2 days a week – so this role can be part remote worked. Your role will be responsible to manage and control the customs and excise activities for the Group in the UK, in line with the company's policies & procedures, and with an aim to ensure continuous compliance with UK customs regulations and UK excise legislation. The incumbent should manage the relationship with external tax advisors for compliance and other consulting activities. The incumbent will be in charge of handling tax audits and requirements from governmental authorities. The incumbent will monitor current and impending changes to tax regulation and perform an assessment of the impact on the business. Day to day this will include:

Customs and Excise Management: customs and excise management of the group’s customs and excise activities in the UK. Coordinating with Europe Customs & Excise Director, the Regional Tax Director, and the tax departments in Headquarters.
Customs and excise compliance: ensure timely payment of customs debt occurring for the goods imported into the UK. Review excise tax returns, prepare claims related to import duties and taxes as well as claims related to excise tax. Manage the customs and excise authorizations held by the business such as AEO, customs warehousing, RTP, etc. Handling customs audits and excise tax requirements with governmental authorities. Manage and instruct customs broker(s) to conduct clearances correctly.
Customs and excise tax developments and monitoring: proactively following up on UK customs and excise tax developments that may impact the UK business, assist in broader UK business development activities, provide assistance and support to other departments in relation to UK customs and excise tax as needed. Seek opportunities to improve current customs and excise processes and procedures.
Tax provisioning and reporting: timely and accurate quarterly and annual provision calculation, ensure recording of provisions, and coordination with accountants from the group entities. Ensure accurate quarterly/annual reporting packages to headquarters. Preparation of tax provisions for budgeting periods. Manage various tasks and projects as they arise and upon the line manager’s request.
It is likely that will either be ex HMRC, in a large accountancy practice or in-house in a Customs & Excise role. It would be beneficial if you had experience of SAP. Strong UK language skills and experience of UK Customs as it relates to large multinational groups is essential.
