Traditionally a tax lawyer would have only ever worked at a larger UK law firm, offering expert opinion to clients and accountants. But we are now seeing the Big 4 accounting firms hiring tax lawyers into niche areas such as Shares Schemes, M&A Tax and International Tax. There are also more opportunities for tax lawyers to work in-house, either in front office tax jobs or transaction tax roles.
However, the UK position contrasts starkly with the US (and indeed mainland Europe), where tax lawyers frequently lead in-house tax functions and their lack of accounting skills is seen as irrelevant. Whether the UK will follow this trend remains to be seen, but at the moment CFOs seem to favour Big 4 trained accountants over tax lawyers.
