International tax jobs are generally viewed by corporate tax specialists as the area of tax to aspire to. This is probably because it is envisaged that there are more complex issues to consider with multiple tax jurisdictions that the UK or Ireland alone.
However, many younger tax practitioners are not aware that most international tax jobs are actually project-management roles. It is simply not possible for any one person to have the depth of understanding of several tax regimes to advise a client (or CFO) on the best course of action. Instead, one calls upon the expertise of a network of tax professionals with expertise in their own country, brings this information together and then presents it to the client (or CFO) with a specific recommendation.
That said, an understanding of double tax treaties is obviously hugely beneficial in any international tax job and this knowledge generally comes from hands-on experience in a commercial environment or within a Big 4 firm. It could be argued that the in-house international tax professionals have deeper experience than their Big 4 counterparts because they have to implement the international tax strategy.
