Indirect Tax and Customs Manager - West Sussex

We are partnering with a leading international group to appoint an experienced Indirect Tax and Customs Manager. This role oversees all global indirect tax matters and and significant, high‑volume customs activity. You'll act as the organisation's subject‑matter expert, guiding day‑to‑day activities, driving tax initiatives, and supporting junior team members.

Responsibilities

* Act as the main point of expertise on customs matters, including operational queries, urgent issues and movements of goods.
* Advise on new market entries, business changes and supply chain considerations.
* Coordinate customs‑related projects and work closely with internal stakeholders.
* Build strong working relationships with brokers, suppliers and external advisers.
* Strengthen controls, documentation and governance frameworks over time.
* Identify improvements to processes, data quality and overall efficiency.
* Oversee indirect tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accurate and timely submissions.
* Highlight tax risks, analyse technical issues and provide clear, commercially focused recommendations.
* Track legislative changes and determine required actions for the business.
* Support indirect tax advisory work and support projects with practical, timely guidance.
* Improve and simplify processes, identifying efficiencies and opportunities for automation.
* Maintain and enhance internal controls, documentation and governance around indirect tax.
* Strengthen data quality by working closely with finance, commercial and operational teams.
* Support the wider tax team and contribute to developing junior colleagues.

Requirements

* Strong UK indirect tax expertise with experience handling cross‑border issues.
* Ability to apply technical knowledge in a commercial environment and make sound decisions quickly.
* Confident communicator able to influence senior stakeholders and explain complex matters clearly.
* Experience improving tax processes, driving efficiencies and managing risk.
* Comfortable managing several workstreams and navigating ambiguous situations.
* Strong analytical skills and a practical, solution‑focused mindset.
* Experience supporting or managing junior team members.
* CTA or ACA qualification preferred, plus a relevant degree or equivalent experience.
* Big Four background advantageous; good Excel and ERP system knowledge beneficial.
